POST #8 – LECTURE - RENAISSANCE - REALISM
When it comes to the Renaissance, was the dominant art style in Europe, and mostly Italy, in the 14th, 15th, and in 16th centuries with many dominant artists such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo. A new interest in art, science, and literature is being formed, and classical antiquity, humanist philosophy, and human worth are things a lot of people are interested in now that the world has been changing. It was also the beginning of new technologies, such as the printing press, which was also a new system of astronomy. Later on, Byzantine art was introduced, which was a more symbolistic style, and the paintings were regularly large. So far, there were three techniques in the Renaissance: fresco, tempera, and oils. Unlike the Byzantine artists, Renaissance artists focused on representing the world realistically. Popes and people of less significance were painted in actual size. The Medici family played an important role when it came to art as well. For example, Giovanni di Bicci de Medici, the first patron of the arts in the Medici family aided Masaccio and commissioned Brunelleschi to reconstruct the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence, in 1419. Medici family, French Médici, Italian bourgeois family that ruled Florence and, later, Tuscany during most of the period from 1434 to 1737, except for two brief intervals. Later in the Renaissance, the Mona Lisa by Da Vinci was created. She was famous for being stolen 2 times, and the rumors that Da Vinci had painted himself first before painting the Mona Lisa on top, or some people say that the Mona Lisa was a man. More artists kept the revolution of the Renaissance, like Michelangelo's David as a symbol of the city and the Renaissance. As the church began to lose its power when it came to art, humanism formed, which is an art style where it focuses on more humans than the supernatural or the "rebirth of ideas", and more less-serious art was created, like the Rococo. When it comes to Humanism though, the artist who was most notorious for this was Raphael from the High Renaissance, who made more human philosophy in art more accurate. He was also famous for the making of his Madonna with large figure compositions. He is also known for being an exceptional architect, and one of the first to preserve the heritage of Rome. "The School of Athens" is one of his most famous pieces. Oil painting during the Renaissance can date back to Jan van Eyck, who painted the debatable painting, the Arnolfini portrait. Many scholars try to interpret this painting in two theories of interpretation Wedding Portrait or for someone who has passed away. The dog represents fidelity and royalty to the couple, and the oranges represent wealth and richness. Years later, an easier way of painting was created, the Camera Obscura. occurs when an image of a scene is projected through a small hole and appears on the wall opposite the opening as an inverted image. It is believed that artists used this shortcut to paint backgrounds and trees, along with the grid, which was also easier for artists where to locate elements on the canvas. Another thing to remember is that Alberti discovered three of his treatises define the new art of the Renaissance - perspective, sculpture and architecture. In other words, Alberti defined art with his treatises. He imagines a new kind of artist that is no longer a mere craftsman, the ideal artist is now an erudite
